Berkeley’s Historic Salon for the Arts
Gibson Art Projects was founded by Reuben Gibson and is headquartered at the Pauline Kael - Jess Murals house in Berkeley, CA. Seminal New Yorker Magazine film critic Kael created a cultural epicenter for the arts and hosted salons with the Bay Area cultural elite, even commissioning the world renowned American visual artist, Jess, to paint murals throughout the home, which still adorn the walls today.
Gibson Art Projects' mission is to promote and develop on the profound rich, artistic and cultural heritage started by Kael, Jess, Duncan & their circle. We're working on using the past as a platform for new cultural discussion, expanding to and including the innovative present. Our program seeks to question the roots of California artistic identity versus an American one, specifically within the context of post-war Bay Area.
We exhibit and sell work by our preferred artists. One way that we do this is through our historic art salon space and gallery at the Pauline Kael - Jess Murals house in Berkeley, California, where we show 3-5 exhibitions per year. Exhibitions revolve around an event schedule, usually featuring an opening, a talk with Q&A, a film screening, and private viewings by appointment.
